Just then, Dev's mother came rushing into the foyer. She looked back over her shoulder to shout, "I told you they were here, Jack!" She headed straight for Dev and pulled him into a hug, yanking him away from Tom in the process. "Sorry, sweetheart. Your father and I were on the back deck getting things ready for dinner. He's barbecuing some steaks in honor of our guest."
"Why do you think Tom would be honored by Dad burning meat?" Dev asked, scowling and pulling away from her. "He's a vegetarian," he said, managing to keep a straight face at the boldfaced lie.
